Began a career in politics as a councillor on the Greater London Council from 1967. Elected as Conservative MP for Louth in 1969. Selected as Conservative candidate for London mayoral election in 2000 but had to withdraw due to charge of perjury. Hugely successful author, his books including Not A Penny, Not A Penny Less (1976), Kane & Abel (1979), First Among Equals (1984) and Honour Among Thieves (1993).
