Studied at Balliol College, University of Oxford. Newscaster for ITN during the 1960s but became well known as the presenter of the BBC news programme Newsnight. Retired from Newsnight in 1998 and has since presented Tomorrow's World and the BBC Radio 4quiz Masterteam. Has presented the live general election results programme on a number of occasions using the infamous swingometer.
