Born 1532. Died 1595 - Navigator and naval commander.

First Englishman to traffic slaves, taking them from West Africa to the Spanish West Indies. As controller of the navy he rebuilt older ships and helped design faster ships to withstand the Spanish Armada. Devised the naval blockade to intercept Spanish treasure ships. Knighted in 1588 for his services against the Armada.
