Apprentice engineer before turning professional and working in music halls and radio. Film debut was Know Your Apples (1933). Other films included Oh, Mr Porter (1937) and My Learned Friend (1943). Forced to retire from the screen due to ill health, remained a radio panellist. Was a respected amateur astronomer.
