Became king in 1216 when he was nine years old succeeding his father King John. Was a weak character who introduced extortionate taxation to combat his own debts while engaging in costly and expensive wars. Was a patron of ecclesiastical architecture – rebuilt Westminster Abbey, saw cathedrals were remodelled and the construction of Salisbury Cathedral.
