Educated at Cambridge University. Worked as a freelance journalist before publishing his first novel Catherine Herself in 1920. Subsequent novels included Knight without Armour (1933), Lost Horizon (1933) and Goodbye Mr Chips (1934). Went to Hollywood to work as a scriptwriter in the 1940s.
