Studied chemistry at St Andrews. Worked at number of universities including Manchester, Durham and Edinburgh. Most famous work was with Norman Haworth in the laboratory synthesis of vitamin C, the first time a vitamin was made artifically. Elected FRS in 1934, knighted in 1964.
