Studied at Lincoln College, Oxford. His contribution to economics was “the theory of underconsumption”. Wrote a number of books including Problems of Poverty (1891), Evolution of Modern Capitalism (1894) and The Science of Wealth (1911). Wrote an autobiography Confessions of an Economic Heretic (1938).
