Born 1789. Died 1861 - English engineer.
Pioneer of the application of mathematics to problems of structural design, becoming an expert on the strength of materials. Worked with Sir William Fairbairn on the design of iron beams, led to him being a consultant on the tubular design for the Britannia Bridge. Elected FRS in 1840.
