Born 1890. Died 1965 - English geologist.

Studied physics and geology at Imperial College, London. Pioneer of geochronology, determining the ages of rocks by measuring their radioactive constituents, publishing The Age of the Earth (1913). Supporter of continental drift theory. Wrote the successful textbook, Principles of Physical Geology (1944). Won the Wollaston Medal and the Penrose Medal in 1956. Has a crater on Mars named after him.
