Samuel Hood
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Thorncombe, Dorset
Born on 12th of December 1724
Died on 27th of January 1816

While perhaps most frequently remembered as a mentor of Nelson, Samuel Hood had a distinguished and lengthy naval career in his own right: his frigate Vestal took the French vessel Bellona in 1759; he served through the American Revolution, including the unsuccessful action at Chesapeake Bay, and the successful ones against the French off St Kitts and then Dominica in 1782. During the French Revolution he faced, and was out-thought by, the young Napoleon at the siege of Toulon
