BOOK MIDDLESBROUGH HOTELS

Ernest W Hornung
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Middlesbrough, Cleveland and Teesside
Born on 7th of June 1866
Died on 22nd of March 1921

Though he wrote many other novels and stories, it is for the Raffles series that EW Hornung is now remembered. The cricket-loving gentleman cracksman AJ Raffles and his sidekick (and former fag) Bunny Manders are said to have been partly modelled on Oscar Wilde and his lover Lord Alfred Douglas, though their partnership and the format of the books also clearly owes much to Holmes and Watson – Conan Doyle was his brother-in-law.

Brit Quote:
All significant truths are private truths. As they become public they cease to become truths; they become facts, or at best, part of the public character; or at worst, catchwords. - T S Eliot
