Victor Horsley

Horsley, the son of a celebrated painter, studied medicine at UCL and in Berlin. He occupied a series of senior academic and clinical roles in his specialism of neurology, and was a pioneer in the field of neurosurgery, knighted for his services to medicine in 1902. Horsley became a passionate temperance campaigner, having seen the injuries and damage to health caused by drink; he was also anti-tobacco, and a strong supporter of the suffragettes. He died of heatstroke while on active service in Iraq during WWI.
