Hutchinson, a protégé of James Paget, was a medical practitioner remarkable for the breadth of his interests, and his pioneering work in many fields. He worked in ophthalmology, dermatology, was a skilled surgeon (publisher of and sole contributor to Archives of Surgery for a decade) and pathologist, and a leading figure in the early days of scientific oral medicine. He is most famous now for his work on congenital syphilis.
