From the age of six to her death Elizabeth Jennings lived in Oxford and its environs, studying at St Anne’s College, and remaining in the city to work as first a librarian, then as a publisher’s reader and newspaper reviewer – but always a poet. Her verse is deceptively simple in metre and form, and was and is seen by some as belonging more to an earlier time than her own, but it is approachable and can be beautiful, and communicates with rather than confuses the reader – she famously wrote (in a study of other artists) ‘Only one thing must be cast out, and that is the vague,’ though she did have a brief flirtation with experimental verse after suffering severe mental problems.
