BOOK MEASHAM HOTELS

Geraldine Jewsbury
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Measham, Derbyshire
Born on 22nd of August 1812
Died on 22nd of September 1880

Jewsbury was an influential literary figure for a period, though rather more for her work as a book reviewer and publisher’s reader (in which capacity she furthered the career of several women writers) than for her various novels and other writings (Dickens professed to admire her work and published short stories by her in Household Words). She is perhaps best remembered now for her romantic but apparently platonic relationship with Jane Carlyle, very publicly revealed in her posthumously published letters.
