Born in Wisbech to parents who had fled the Nazis, Kroto (the name shortened thus in 1955 from the original Krotoschiner) was educated at Bolton School, and because it was reputedly the best chemistry department, at Sheffield University. A humanist of republican sympathies, he was however knighted in 1996, the same year in which he became a Nobel laureate for his work on buckminsterfullerene. Kroto taught and researched at the University of Sussex until 2004, when he took up a role at Florida State. He is also a gifted graphic designer
