Died on 13rd of March 1920

Lapworth trained as a teacher, and worked in that profession in Galashiels for several years during which he studied the fossils of the border region, work that led him to suggest what is known now as the Ordovician geological period. He later was appointed as the first professor of geology at what became Birmingham University.
