Richard Laws was a zoologist whose twin areas of expertise form an odd pair – large African mammals, and his great specialism, Antarctic elephant seals and great whales. He served as director of the British Antarctic Survey between 1973 and 1987, was a member of the International Whaling Commission, and was from 1985 to 1996 Master of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge.
