David Lodge worked as an English Teacher for the British Council before moving into academia proper with a lecturing role at Birmingham University in 1960. He remained at Birmingham, barring a three-year break in the USA, until he retired in 1987 to write full time. Lodge had by then already published several novels, including the first two in the Campus Trilogy for which he is probably most famous. He has also written theatrical pieces, television adaptations, and a great deal of literary criticism.
