Mankowitz, of Russian Jewish descent, was educated at Downing College, Cambridge. His writing career took off with his novel (later filmed) A Kid for Two Farthings, and he wrote several plays that enjoyed moderate success, but it is as a scriptwriter that he will be remembered, working most notably on (the 1967) Casino Royale, Expresso Bongo, and The Millionairess.
