George Newman

Newman, a Quaker, studied medicine at KCL and Edinburgh University, then gained a scholarship to study public health at Cambridge. His work as a local authority medical officer led to the publication of the seminal ‘Infant Mortality: a Social Problem’ in 1906, after which he was appointed Chief Medical Officer to the Board of Education and then the Board of Health. Newman pioneered school medical inspections, and wrote widely on preventative medicine among many other medical topics. He was knighted in 1911.
