Walter Pater
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Stepney, London
Born on 4th of August 1839
Died on 30th of July 1894

Pater was a scholar, critic, author and perhaps above all a major influence on writers - like Wilde, Proust, Pound and Eliot - whose fame now far exceeds his own, and on strands of our culture including the stream-of-consciousness novel and the Aesthetic Movement. At Queen’s College, Oxford his reading took him well beyond the bounds of his prescribed studies, though his vast knowledge was not reflected in the standard of his degree. He remained in Oxford, tutoring undergraduates privately, before being awarded a fellowship at Brasenose. A great prose stylist, his most famous work is Studies in the History of the Renaissance; his most seminal writings, however, were probably his series of ‘imaginary portraits.’
