BOOK ISLINGTON HOTELS

Karl Pearson
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Islington, London
Born on 27th of March 1857
Died on 27th of April 1936

Pearson’s early academic career involved studying mathematics at King’s College, Cambridge, physics and metaphysics in Heidelberg (where his original name Carl became, and stuck as, Karl), Roman Law, German literature and Socialism in Berlin, and the law at both Lincoln’s Inn and Inner Temple. He eventually focussed somewhat on mathematics, especially statistics, with professorships at UCL, KCL, and Gresham College. He was a convinced eugenicist, much of his mathematical work linked to that subject, but also a freethinker whose socialist principles saw him refuse a knighthood.
