John Cowper Powys (the middle name indicating William Cowper was an ancestor, as indeed was John Donne) was a novelist heavily influenced by the works of Thomas Hardy. He lectured for many years in America, in that capacity touring the country extensively. A published poet before he became a novelist, he also wrote on philosophical topics, produced literary criticism, and penned an acclaimed autobiography, his total output running to more than 50 books.
