Quiller-Couch read classics at Trinity College Oxford before embarking on a varied career, though with literature always at its heart. In 1912 he was appointed Professor of English Literature at Cambridge, his work there making him a leading critic. He also published poetry and essays, and under the pseudonym Q wrote several novels set in his native Cornwall.
