William Ridge
Born in Chatham, KentBorn in 1857
Died on 30th of September 1930
Ridge was working as a railway clerk when he published his first stories. He became an immensely popular writer of short stories and novels in which he often portrayed lower class people, many of them cockneys, in humorous situations. At one time he was called the new Dickens (partly because of his philanthropy towards children’s organisations), and enjoyed a friendship with HG Wells, but his popularity declined as he and his style aged.
