William Chandler Roberts (the Austen was added at the request of, and to inherit from, an uncle) was a pioneer in research into alloys. He was trained at the Royal School of Mines, where he later taught before being appointed to senior positions at the Royal Mint, his work there making him an acknowledged expert in the minting of coins. He was made an FRS in 1875, and knighted in 1899.
