A scion of the Rothschild banking dynasty, Lionel Walter Rothschild was forced to work in his family’s financial empire until 1908, in spite of showing a singular lack of ability. His first and abiding love was zoology, briefly studied in Bonn and Cambridge, then as the owner of a private zoological collection added to during regular exotic expeditions. A veritable menagerie of creatures now bear his name.
