Samuel Ryder
Born in Preston, LancashireBorn on 24th of March 1858
Died on 2nd of January 1936
Samuel Ryder came to golf rather late in life, when he was 50, taking it up for his health. He nevertheless left his mark on the world game – not as a player, but as the driving force (sorry) of what became the Ryder Cup, which he championed and sponsored. His wealth came from a clever business idea brilliantly managed – selling affordable penny packets of seeds by mail order.
