George Saintsbury
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Southampton, Hampshire
Born on 23rd of October 1845
Died on 28th of January 1933

After his Oxford studies Saintsbury became a schoolmaster in Manchester, Guernsey and Elgin, then a journalist in London, writing primarily for the Saturday Review and Macmillan’s. His journalistic work as a literary critic then saw him publish several scholarly works and in 1895 become professor of English literature at Edinburgh University. He wrote widely on French and English literature, from major figures to obscure ones. Intriguingly, however, it is for his wine connoisseurship, beautifully captured in Notes on a Cellar-Book, that he is nowadays remembered
