Born 1949 - British rock singer and guitarist.
Worked as journalist and teacher before forming the rock bank Dire Straits in 1976 with his brother David. Gained recognition with Sultans of Swing and further success with Brothers in Arms (1985). First solo album Golden Heart (1996). Awarded OBE in 2000.
