The second son of Queen Victoria, Prince Alfred joined the Navy in 1858 aged 14, rising to the command of the frigate Galatea in 1867. In that role he became the first member of the royal family to visit Australia and likewise New Zealand. In a second visit to Sydney he was wounded in an assassination attempt. Victoria gave him the title Duke of Edinburgh in 1866, and in 1893 he succeeded to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. A keen if untalented musician he helped establish the RCM.
