Nigel Short’s life has revolved around his passion and his profession, chess, since he was a child, first as a player, and latterly as an administrator, writer and commentator. His achievements include being the youngest to participate in the British Chess Championship (when 12); the (at the time) youngest International Master; the (then) youngest Grandmaster; and in 1993 the first British player to compete for the world title (though he lost badly to Garry Kasparov).
