Educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge. In 1742 wrote Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (1751) and Pindaric Odes (1757). Declined laureateship in 1757. Became Professor of History and Modern Languages at Cambridge in 1768.
