George Simpson

Simpson became the first person to be appointed to lecture in the field of meteorology at a British university (Manchester) in 1905, was meteorologist to Scott’s Antarctic expedition in 1910, and in 1920 became director of the Meteorological Office (having held senior positions in its Indian equivalent). He was an active researcher, particularly in the areas of thunderstorms and the causes of lightning.
