BOOK GITTISHAM HOTELS

Joanna Southcott
- Favourite Briton.

Born in Gittisham, Devon
Born on 0st of April 1750
Died on 27th of December 1814

Joanna Southcott described herself as a prophetess, while others generally resort to the phrase religious fanatic. She claimed to be the woman dramatically foretold in Revelation as the one who would bear a son to rule all nations with a rod of iron. In 1814, when in her sixties, she told her followers she would give birth to said son that October, but unsurprisingly did not, dying of a brain tumour in December. A sealed box she left to be opened in a time of great national crisis is still the cause of curiosity, debate and dispute.
