Trained as actor at RADA. Assistant director with Royal Shakespeare Company from 1966. Developed style of improvisation in collaboration with handpicked actors. Film debut was Bleak Moments (1971). Television successes included Nuts in May (1976) and Abigails’s Party (1977). Films included Life is Sweet (1990) and Secrets and Lies (1996). Awarded OBE in 1993.
