Though he has presented several television shows, Simon Mayo is best known for his work on radio. From humble beginnings on Southlands Hospital Radio and Radio Warwick (the university where he studied history and politics) he moved to Radio Nottingham and then Radio 1, for several years presenting the flagship breakfast show. After 15 years with that station he moved to Radio 5, the exceptional quality of his afternoon show winning him a Sony Award. Rarely for radio presenters he appeared to have read the books of any guest promoting them, seen the films likewise, and could talk intelligently about them. His Friday film review shows with Mark Kermode remain one of the BBC’s most enjoyable products, and as a day job he also presents the drive-time show on Radio 2.
