Acted before becoming a television director. Directed Z Cars (1962) followed by the Wednesday Play series. First feature film Poor Cow (1967) followed by Kes (1969) and Family Life (1971). Later films have included Hidden Agenda (1990), Carla’s Song (1997) and Bread and Roses (2000).
