Nick Clegg

Unusually for a 21st century British politician Nick Clegg worked in a variety of roles outside politics before becoming first an MEP and then an MP. More typically he came from a privileged background. These included journalism for the FT, as a lobbyist, and for the European Commission, building metaphorical bridges with countries of the former USSR. He was a Liberal Democrat MEP 1999 – 2004, and was elected to the Commons in 2005, becoming party leader in 2007. After the 2010 General Election Clegg agreed to the formation of a coalition government with the Conservatives, serving as Deputy Prime Minister until the 2015 election. He resigned following the mauling of his party in that contest. Clegg speaks several European languages.
