Born 1913 - English astronomer and pioneer of RADAR.

Studied at Bristol University. During WWII developed airborne radar for blind bombing and submarine defence. Pioneer in use of radar to detect meteors. Responsible for funding, construction and use of the radio telescope at Jodrell Bank. Collaborated with Fred Whipple in study of flare stars. Elected FRS in 1955, knighted in 1961.
