Angela Lansbury has had a long life, and packed a huge amount into it, her acting career starting in her teens and continuing into her nineties. Having fled London for New York during the Blitz she worked for MGM, mainly in minor roles, from 1942 to 1952, after which she took on more varied and sometimes demanding parts, including Broadway productions. Her greatest screen role was surely the evil Mrs Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate in 1962, though generations of British children may prefer her inept witch in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Lansbury has also starred in musicals like Sweeney Todd, played Gertrude at the National Theatre, and of course for more than a decade starred in Murder She Wrote.
