His major break came with the Royal National Theatre where he was directed by Laurence Olivier. His distinctive voice and deadpan comic delivery made him a household name with television series such as Butterflies and As Time Goes By. Films include The Madness of King George, Mrs Brown and James Bond's Tomorrow Never Dies. Awarded an OBE in 2004.
