1842 - 1900 . English composer.

Studied music at Leipzig Gewandhaus. Eighteen year partnership with W S Gilbert produced 14 comic Savoy operas from 1871 including HMS Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1880) and The Mikado (1885). Composed an opera, cantatas, ballads and hymn tunes. Wrote tune for Onward Christian Soldiers. Buried in St Paul’s Cathedral.
