Born 1915. Died 1989 - Scottish folk singer, composer, author and playwright.
Helped form the experimental Theatre Workshop in the 1940s. During the 1950s his music came to the fore. Wrote the opera Landscape and Chimneys (1955) and began his series of Radio Ballads in 1957. Founded the Ballads and Blues Club. Best known songs include Dirty Old Town (1946) and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (1958). Pioneer of British folk-music revival.
