Failed investment meant she had to earn living as writer from 1829. Success with Illustrations of Political Economy and Poor Laws and Paupers Illustrated (1833-34). Novels included Deerbrook (1839) and The Hour and the Man (1840). The agnostic theme of her Letters on the Laws of Man’s Social Nature (1851) caused much offence. Her Autobiographical Memoir was published posthumously in 1877.
