Made stage debut in The Rascal (1931) at Aldershot. Film debut in Late Extra (1935). Attained popularity in costume dramas such as The Man in Grey (1943) and Fanny by Gaslight (1944). Moved to Hollywood in 1947. Films included A Star is Born (1954, nominated for Academy Award), Georgy Girl (1966), Lolita (1962) and The Shooting Party (1984).
