Born 1919. Died 1999 - Irish novelist, playwright and philosopher.

Philosophical works included The Sovereignty of the Good (1970) and The Fire and the Sun (1977). First novel Under the Net (1954) was followed by 26 further novels including The Sandcastle (1957), The Bell (1958), The Sea (1978, won Booker Prize) and The Green Knight (1993). Wrote several plays and a book of poetry. Made DBE in 1987. Suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in final years of her life.
