Opposed 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty, captured in civil war fighting. Edited official IRA newspaper, left IRA in 1934 and fought for Spanish republic (1936-37). Wrote about his experiences in Storm (1925), The Gates Flew Open (1934) and There Will Be Another Day (1963). Edited the literary monthly The Bell (1946-54).
